Surprise, It's Sweden!

LOCATION:

Malmo, Sweden

After learning that Malmo, Sweden was a mere thirty minute train ride from Copenhagen, we decided it would be fun to go to Sweden for lunch. Because hey, how often can you say "Let's go to Sweden for lunch?"

See that faint bridge in the background? That's the bridge between Denmark and Sweden!

Not surprisingly, because they are so close, Copenhagen and Malmo look pretty similar. The "old town" had squares that looked similar to those we had just come from, but were pretty nonetheless.

Building. Neat.

Our mission to have lunch in Sweden turned out to be a super success. We stumbled across an international food festival that was traveling throughout the country, with booths from France, Australia, Britain, Austria, Greece, Germany, Switzerland and many more. I decided my lunch would be from a country we aren't planning on visiting on this trip, so opted for the Greek gyro. Greek lunch on a day trip from Denmark to Sweden? How much culture can I pack into a day?!

French ratatouille in huge pans!

Not quite ready to try kangaroo, despite the many reasons why I apparently should.

British fudge and nougat. We bought an embarrassingly large quantity.

Gyro. Tasty.

We did more than just eat in a new country, we did a pretty good job of exploring the town of Malmo. It is Sweden's third largest city and has a very young population - almost 50% are under thirty-five. Because it was a sunny day the were plenty of young people and families walking around the harbor and boardwalk area. The city is growing quickly, and seeing so much new architecture was a nice change of pace. Malmo is also considered one of the most environmentally friendly cities in Europe - a lot of the new construction meets green standards. The tallest building in the skyline is called the "Twisted Torso" and it's easy to see why!

The harbor - new apartments and the torso in the background.

The torso close up!

So even though Malmo was surprisingly cool, the real reason we went was because neither of us had ever been to Sweden before and couldn't resist the opportunity to add another country to the list, especially because it was so close!

Erin adds another country to the list!

Yay Sweden!
